Austin native will take over Mueller airport project

Matt Whelan hired as top Austin executive for Catellus

Catellus Development Co., the company overseeing the redevelopment of the former Robert Mueller Municipal Airport, has named Matt Whelan as senior vice president in charge of the project.

Whelan succeeds Greg Weaver, who has been Catellus' top executive in Austin since 2003. Weaver is moving to Denver to take a bigger role with Catellus.

Whelan is an Austin native and former senior vice president of CCNG Realty Inc.

At that company, he was in charge of strageic planning and real estate operations at Spanish Oaks, a luxury golf course residential community near the Village of Bee Cave.

With the Mueller project, he will oversee the transformation of the former airport into a 711-acre new neighborhood with 4,600 residential units, 3.8 million square feet of office space, 650,000 square feet of retail space and a major health complex anchored by the Dell Children's Medical Center of Texas.
